Authors: Seong, Yeong Bae; Crow, Ryan; House, P. Kyle; Howard, Keith; Lee, Cho-Hee; Yu, Byong Yong
Abstract: Four new10Be-26Al isochron burial ages ranging from 4.4 to 2 Ma on ancestral Colorado River deposits in the lower Colorado River corridor (LCRC) help constrain the river&amp;apos;s evolution during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. They help fill a gap between previous work that focused on older and younger deposits: Older dated deposits include the 5 Ma Bouse Formation, which records the integration of the Colorado River through a series of preexisting basins to the Gulf of California and the ca. 4.5-3.5 Ma Bullhead Alluvium, a 200 to 300 m thick aggregational package that immediately followed integration. The much younger, 100-70 ka, Chemehuevi Formation is another major aggradation package mapped throughout the LCRC. The new burial ages on the facies of Santa Fe Railway (4.37 +/- 0.71 Ma), boulder conglomerate ofBat Cave Wash (2.12 +/- 0.26 and 2.05 +/- 0.31 Ma), and the Palo Verde alluvium (3.03 +/- 0.26 Ma) partially fill in a 3.5 M.y. gap between the deposition of the Bullhead Alluvium and the Chemeheuvi Formation and document the timescales over which the Colorado River was able to remove the Bullhead aggradational package and initiate newer and smaller aggradational pulses.</summary>

Authors: Ha, Sangmin; Kang, Hee-Cheol; Lee, Seongjun; Seong, Yeong Bae; Choi, Jeong-Heon; Kim, Seok-Jin; Son, Moon
Abstract: Earthquake prediction in intraplate regions, such as the Korean Peninsula, is challenging due to the complexity of fault distributions. This study employed diverse methods and data sources to investigate Quaternary surface rupturing along the Yangsan Fault, aiming to understand its long-term earthquake behavior. Paleoseismic data from the Byeokgye section (7.6 km) of the Yangsan Fault are analyzed to provide insights into earthquake parameters (i.e., timing, displacement, and recurrence intervals) as well as structural patterns. Observations from five trench sites indicate at least six faulting events during the Quaternary, with the most recent surface rupturing occurring approximately 3000 years ago. These events resulted in a cumulative horizontal displacement of 76 m and a maximum estimated magnitude of Mw 6.7-7.1. The average slip rate of 0.13 +/- 0.1 mm yr-1 suggests a quasi-periodic model with possible recurrence intervals exceeding 13 000 years. Structural patterns indicate the reactivation of a pre-existing fault core with top-to-the-west geometry, causing a dextral slip with a minor reverse component. This study underscores the several surface ruptures with large earthquakes along the inherited mature Yangsan Fault, since at least the Early Pleistocene, offering critical insights for seismic hazard and a broader understanding of intraplate earthquake dynamics, enhancing earthquake prediction efforts.</summary>
