- Abstract
- Enteral feeding is needed for patients with dysphagia (PWD) who are at risk of malnutrition, poor fluid intake and aspiration pneumonia. Currently feeding through nasogastric (NG) tube and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) are preferred method for management of PWD. The clinical outcome between NG tube and PEG feeding has been reported comparable, but higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding has been reported in NG tube than PEG feeding. In general, NG tube feeding is recommended for early phase of dysphagia and short term use of tube feeding is expected in PWD. However, if long-term use of NG tube feeding is required, PEG should be considered for an alternative route. And the decision should be made collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, patient and caregivers and family.
