dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of temporal space between practice sessions on learning of visuomotor rotation task. The theoretical background underlying current study was based on the notion of memory consolidation, a phenomenon of motor memory that continues long after the completion of practice repetition during inactivity period. Total four groups of healthy participants (n=36) practiced the visuomotor rotation task either with 10 minute or 24 hour inactivity period between practice sessions, and with/without perturbation task after regular task practice. A retention test was administered approximately 24 hours later following the completion of practice phase. The results indicated that all groups showed improvement in the accuracy of task performance measured by the distance error during practice phase. However, only the groups who did not have a perturbation task exhibited higher accuracy of performance during retention test. The outcome of movement time demonstrated that the group without experiencing a perturbation task and with longer temporal separation between practice sessions showed the shortest movement time during retention test. These findings suggest that practicing additional tasks after the regular training sessions could perturb memory consolidation processes for visuomotor adaptation learning. In addition, longer space between practice sessions may facilitate production of fast pointing movements during visuomotor rotation tasks, consistent with the notion of memory consolidation hypothesis. | - |
