The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of the obstacle ambulation training program on functional gait parameters in an individual with cerebellar ataxia. A female participant(44 years old) with ataxic movement disorders due to the cerebellar atrophy was recruited. The obstacle crossing training, which based on task-specific regimen, was applied for 1½-hour, three times weekly sessions for ten weeks. The results showed that, compared to baseline, obstacle ambulation time, freezing time, and toe-clearance were decreased while pre- and post-obstacle distance were increased after intervention. Thus, the patient exhibited substantial improvements of obstacle ambulation and functional gait ability. The results from this case study suggest that a task-relevant obstacle ambulation training program may have a beneficial effect on functional gait rehabilitation for individuals with cerebellar disease.-
