- Abstract
- Dr. Park Byeongchae(1925-1993)enthusiastically carried out investigations into the ancient Korean writing system from the 1960s through the 1980s. One of his remarkable achievements is setting up a theory that the origin of writing system adopted by early Koreans is the existence of 'not translated words'(不飜語) in Chinese texts on Buddism translated from Sanskrit.
He made an effort to prove his theory by supporting evidences abstracted chiefly from Hyangga(鄕歌). Besides this theory, he left behind many academic achievements on Idu(吏讀), Kugyol(口訣) and Hyangchal(鄕札). But from the perspective of today, among his achivements there also are things incorrect and then needed for improvement. And we can say that the renewal and improvement of Dr. Park's research is dependent on ourselves from now on.
