- Abstract
- Hong, Jungha. 2012. 8. Diachronic Changes of Text Types in Newspaper: Using a Statistical Analysis of Trends in the Use of Conjunctive Adverbs. Korean Linguistics 56, 275-315. Biber (1988: 70) suggested the term ‘text type’ to refer to groupings of texts that are similar with respect to their linguistic forms, irrespective of genre categories. In this perspective, the distribution of linguistic forms can be regarded as a criterion for assessing text-typological properties of a text or a text type and text-typological similarities and differences among observed texts or text types. This paper aims to detect diachronic changes of text types in newspaper using a statistical analysis of trends in the use of Korean conjunctive adverbs as a measure reflecting their features and diachronic changes. I investigate two sub-text-types of newspaper: editorials/commentaries and reportages indicating text-typological similarities and differences between them. Their quantitative changes, as found in the 21st Century Sejong Tagged Corpora, are statistically estimated by Mann-Kendall Trend Test and Correspondence Analysis. This paper shows (i) that the editorial/commentary text type has a downward trend of causal text structures representing the speaker's problem-solving, (ii) that the reportage text type exhibits an upward trend of contrastive text structures indicating the speaker's problem-posing, and (iii) that ‘hajiman’(하지만) and orality in both text types are commonly investigated as emerging trends. These findings also underline the importance of considering statistical approaches as a method useful to diachronic linguistics.
