To keep pace with the rapidly growing incidence of colorectal cancer, substantial progress has been made in colorectal cancer management in recent decades. Minimally invasive surgery is rapidly gaining acceptance for surgical management of colorectal cancer; however, laparoscopic colorectal surgery is technically demanding and has a steep learning curve. Although many colorectal surgeons have great expectations of the robotic surgical system to overcome the pitfalls of laparoscopic surgery, the application of robots in colorectal cancer surgery seems to be delayed when compared with other surgical fields. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing number of reports on robotic colorectal surgery and much attention is given to it in the colorectal community. Most of the interest has been in robotic total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer. In contrast, the use of robotics for colon resections does not confer significant advantages. We summarize the current evidence on clinical and oncologic outcomes of robotic colorectal surgery. © 2010 Springer-Verlag London Ltd.-
