We report two questionnaire studies designed to observe how Korean learners of English recover elliptical meaning when the focus is shifted to the non-default position(sluicing) and the contrastive focus is placed(gapping). The ambiguous sentences were presented in it. The result of sluicing experiment showed that there was a significant difference in focus shift for determining the choice of antecedent of sluiced constituent, but there was no significant effect of adding contrastive focus in gapping experiment that the two ambiguous constituents left over after gapping. As a result, it was observed that Korean learners of English were affected more by focus shift than by focus adding.-
