- Abstract
- The purpose of the study is to investigate if the influences from three masters, Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa, and Louis Kahn, who influenced Mario Botta in his architectural activity and works, are revealed in his architectural style, to define his architectural styles that express his identity the most consistently and universally, and to analyze how the architectural style is materialized via what elements comprehensively. The research will be processed in three steps. First, the architectural philosophy and style inherited from three masters would be investigated from literature. Second, Mario Botta's architectural style would be re-defined from five perspectives, and five built works from three building types, house, public facility and religious building, would be selected and be analyzed from the five perspectives. Third, the outcome would be drawn from the analysis.
The results of the study are as follows. First, It was confirmed that Mario Botta‘s architectural style was influenced from three masters as follows; his methodology of floor plan composition at early house projects, formal composition of elevation, and the use of light in space via sky light. Second, his style was virtually and universally realized in his works in frequent manner.
Third, the analysis based on five perspectives reveals that the Euclidean geometry was applied in almost every work, and the symmetric style was applied selectively according to the characteristics of the project irrelevant to the time, building type and scale of the project.
