dc.description.abstract | Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) incorporated with alginic acid (Alg) and sodium alginate (Alg-Na) were prepared and characterized to compare the effects of the alginic compounds on CPC properties. A powder component of the CPC was α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) powders and its liquid component was an aqueous solution of sodium hydrogen phosphate. The alginic compounds were dissolved in the liquid component. The CPC was characterized by the measurement of dynamic viscosity, pH, initial setting time, water absorbance, and mechanical strength. The characterization of CPC material properties were performed using SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. A radical increase in dynamic viscosity of the CPC with 0.7 wt% alginic acid was shown between approximately 100 and 120 sec, while that of the CPC with 0.7 wt% sodium alginate was shown at approximately 400 sec. The CPC pH was decreased by the addition of alginic acid and reached to near neutral. The diametral tensile and compressive strengths of the CPC incorporated with above 0.7 wt% alginic acid were significantly higher than that of cement incorporated with sodium alginate at equivalent concentrations (p < 0.05). The maximal diametral tensile and compressive strengths of the CPC with alginic acid, incubated for 1 week in physiological saline solution were approximately 2.3 and 13.2 MPa. | - |
