dc.description.abstract | It is not a surprising remark that many of the major theorists in diverse scholarly fields have recently joined the world-wide debates on the liberal republican revival, initiated by Philip Pettit and Quentin Skinner. On the one hand, this newly emerged republicanism has been purported as the most attractive alternative, which is at once anti-collectivist and anti-atomist, to neo-liberalism as well as other normative theories, such as liberalism, socialism, and communitarianism (civic republicanism). On the other hand, the liberal republican revival has been devalued as nothing but a variant of liberalism in terms of contestability that could be defended on liberal grounds or an unsettled disguise of civic republicanism in relation to the cultivation of widespread civic virtue that could take precedence over individual autonomy. With these resonances in mind, this interview with Philip Pettit aims at investigating the liberal republican revival in three aspects: the conceptual originality of liberty as non-domination with respect to its differences from liberalism as well as other classical republican traditions, the realization of liberty as non-domination without harming the plurality of human values or without resorting to extraordinary forces, and the applicability of liberty as non-domination especially in South Korea which is experiencing both the post-democratic political change after democratization and the self-enlightening mobilization through cyber networks. | - |
