- Abstract
- Therapeutic Low intensity of ultrasound (LIUS) in the management of osteoarthritis (OA) has been reported in several studies. However, the effects or underlying mechanisms of LIUS on chronic inflammation and inflammatory pain are still not clear. In this study, We tested the antinociceptive effect of LIUS when applied to inflammatory pain state. The inflammatory reaction was induced by intra-articular injection of MIA into the knee joint. MIA-induced rats
are treated during 21 day period with LIUS. Paw withdrawal threshold to mechanical and cold stimulus was assessed by using von Frey hair and acetone, respectively. To test the degree of inflammation, diameter of knee joint was measured by using Vernier callipers. After MIA injection, diameter of knee joint and paw withdrawal threshold application significantly increased. However LIUS treatment significantly reduced the edema and paw withdrawal threshold to von Frey hair from 4 days after treatment, LIUS treatment did not change the paw withdrawal threshold to acetone. These results may suggest that therapeutic ultrasound inhibits inflammation response and the sensitization of nociceptors in the inflammatory process.
