- Abstract
- Kim, Heesung, Jang, Youngsoo, Shin, Jiyoung, & Kim, Kee-Ho. 2007. Relative Temporal Stability in English Speech Rhythm by Korean Learners. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-3, 431-450. The purpose of this study is to observe how English rhythm is manifested by Korean learners with respect to the relative temporal stability or temporal constraint of syllable. In this study, the speech cycling task, repeating a short phrase with the series of beeps of same interval, was used to examine temporal distribution of stressed beats. According to the production experiment with and without a beep, the temporal arrangement of the stressed beats by Korean learners was affected much by syllable adding, while native English speakers (Tajima 1998) showed smaller temporal displacement, and beats were temporally lined up at the certain phases. Besides, without a beep, the completion time for repeating the experimental phrase showed a variation across individual Korean learners.(Korea University)
