Henoch-Schönlein purpura presenting as hemorrhagic vesicles and bullae with gastrointestinal hemorrhage

Abstract

Henoch-Schönlein purpura is the most common vasculitis in children, and classically includes non-thrombocytopenic purpura, abdominal pain, arthritis, and glomerulonephritis. The diversity of skin rashes may be a source of diagnostic confusion, and bullous lesions are uncommon in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Gastrointestinal symptoms occurs in 45-75% of patients. Colicky abdominal pain, vomiting, and bleeding are dominant features. This report describes a child with Henoch-Schönlein purpura, who had hemorrhagic bullae as an initial manifestation of the disease and gastrointestinal bleeding during the course of the disease.
