dc.description.abstract | Since 2007, the discussion of mainstream films has been fully started in China. This discussion was triggered and activated by the academic forum related to Chinese mainstream films, held by a film-related research institute under the Chinese government in November 2007 and October 2011. Among diverse opinions and arguments for mainstream films, the core is that Chinese mainstream films should not only achieve commercial success in film market, but also accord with the national mainstream ideology and cultural values, contrary to the concept of mainstream film commonly used in the West. Readjusting the existing concept of mainstream film to Chinese-style, it could be called ‘Chinese Mainstream Film’. ‘Chinese Mainstream Film’ could be an ideal film type with Chinese characteristics required in the 21st century. In case of the existing commercial films, it could be reached through the active reflection of main stream ideology and cultural values. In case of Main Melody Films, it could be reached by actively seeking for the improvement of power to mobilize audience. The relevant discussion is in accordance with the film guidance /management policies of Chinese government, and also based on the concrete conditions of Chinese film industry in the early 2000s such as 1) rapid growth of Chinese film industry, 2) rapid progress of commercial & entertainment films, and 3) recession of Main Melody Films. | - |
