This study aims to inquire into the transformation of Japan’s structural reform, which has been crucial in the friction of Japan-the U.S. trade relation, focusing on the outcome of a year of Abenomics. I begin from considering how the negotiating process of the trade affected Japan’s economic structure and policy. First of all, the unfolding stages of the trade are divided as follows: The primary stage as 1960s after the World War II, the secondary stage as the middle 1970s and 80s, the tertiary stage as the middle 1980s to 1994, the quarternary stage as after the establishment of World Trade Organization (1995) and lastly, the fifth stage as the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011). Especially, I examined the three case study. First of all, the process of Structural Impediments Initiative (1989-1991) and the U.S.-Japan Framework Talks on Bilateral Trade (1993-1996) will be given attention. The structural reformation of Japan to the correction request from the U.S. will be considered. Then I will analyze the planing of Abenomics (Dec. 2012~), in relation to policy intervention from the U.S., along with Japan’s structural reformation with the former two cases. As a result, through the comparative analysis of the process and mechanism of Japan’s structural reformation, the study attempts to suggest the path of Abenomics, reflecting on the meaning of the policy’s reformation and continuity.-
