- Abstract
- The god of Seoulginogwuigut, who is Jungdee, is the subject of this study. The
characteristics of the god and the meanings of Jungdee are investigated and introduced in the
document.
The study was conducted by observing its ritual and interpreting/deciphering it's shamanic
myths.
The ritual for Jungdee, Seoulginogwuigut, is composed of dances and songs performed by a
shaman. For the ritual, the shaman is dressed in a special suit; a blue skirt and a big wig, a
goblet. The big wig symbolizes Jungdee’s high status in Seoulginogwuigut. The goblet means
a banquet for Jungdee.
The songs performed in the ritual are Siwangkamangcheonbae, Jungdeenoraekarak, and
Jungdeekongsu. That songs are analyzed and explained in the other paper. Siwangkamangcheonbae
is not analyzed in the other paper.
The meanings of the ritual song titles can be summarized as follows :
Innterpreting Siwangkamangcheonbae means of Kamang, Jundee. Kamang is name of gods of
Korean shaman ritual. Siwangkamang is Kamang of The Other world. Jungdee is Kamang of
The Other world. Names of Jungdeenoraekarak means load of deadman. That load is from
deadman lived in hometown to Sibdeawang of The Other World.
Jungdee is composed of two words : “jung” and “dee”. The former means middle or between,
and the latter means a place. The literal interpretation of Jungdee is a middle place; where is
located between this world and the other world. This world belongs to the alive while the other
world is for the dead.
The ritual is composed of a sequence of performances.
First, the shaman performs dancing and singing for Jungdee. One of Jungdee’s role is
guiding the deadman to Sibdaewang. Jungdee helps a deadman and protect a deadman from
dangerous. This part of performance is appreciation and comfort. Then, a performance for Saja, who catches and carries the deadman to the other world, is done by the shaman. This part of
performance is a prayer for the safe journey of the deadman.
The order of the ritual sequence is always same : the ritual for Jungdee happens prior to that
for Saja. The same shaman performs the rituals for Jungdee and Saja because the load of
Jungdee and Saja are considered same.
