The objective of this study was to provide basic data for a gait method of in middle aged women with obesity. Subjects those who had no medical history like cardiac disorder, no lower limb congenital malformation or lower limbs joint problem were divided into control group(54.867±5.952) and obese group(53.267±7.051) based on patient's Body Mass Index. Patients were asked to walk on flatland, to ascend and descend a five step staircase with a riser height of 18㎝ and a thread of 25㎝. The first and last step were excluded from the measurement on account of the affection to the walking speed and step stride. The four muscles that were evaluated were the Rectus Femoris, Biceps Femoris, Tibialis Anterior and Gastrocnemius muscles, which are related to knee and ankle joint movement. Muscle activation and fatigue of the four lower limb muscles were measured by surface EMG. The conclusions of statistical analysis between the two groups are as follows; 1. In walking level surface, there was significant difference in muscle activation of the Tibialis Anterior and Gastrocnemius muscles and in muscle fatigue of the Biceps Femoris and Tibialis Anterior muscles. 2. In cases of ascending stairs, there was significant difference in muscle activation of the Rectus Femoris, Tibialis Anterior and Gastrocnemius muscles but no statistically significant difference was observed in muscle fatigue. In case of descending stairs, there was significant difference in muscle activation of the Biceps Femoris and Tibialis Anterior muscles and in muscle fatigue of the Rectus Femoris muscles. 3. The time spent on walking level surface and stepping stairs, the experimental group required more time to complete the task than the normal group. This difference in time was statistically significant.-
