As the most exquisite verbal discourse, the Spring and Autumn rhetoric presented in Zuo Zhuan has always been valued. The most important feature of this verbal mode is "citing evidence". Compared to quoting poems, which has been greatly valued as a constituent element of the Spring and Autumn rhetoric and has been studied fruitfully and deeply, quoting adverbs has been bestowed with only meager academic effort. Unlike quoted poems that appear in both the character's discourse and the narrator's discourse, the quoted proverbs fundamentally appear in character’s dialogue or character’s comments, and their discourse function is different, too. This article intends to compare the quoted proverbs and the quoted poems in Zuo Zhuan, and explore the discourse function of the quoted proverbs and its effect in the formation of the style of the Spring and Autumn rhetoric.-
