dc.description.abstract | (Background and Purpose) Founded in 1995 by Bijoy Jain, Studio Mumbai has been attracting worldwide attention since 2006 after winning numerous international architectural awards in recognition of its originality and design approach. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the residential project of Studio Mumbai completed between 2003 and 2011, to understand the use of local materials and the environmental characteristics of the site in order to derive what possibilities are presented when closely applied to the design process. (Method) Chapter 2 examines the background of Bijoy Jain's architectural philosophy and approach to design prior to case analysis. Based on this, Chapter 3 analyzes and summarizes the design diversity and characteristics of various residential projects from 2003 to 2011, and then selects four case projects to determine the choice and meaning of the materials used, the relationship with the site, and the space. The spatial effect were analyzed. In addition, the inflow and control method of light in each house and its effect on space was examined. By summarizing the findings, the effects and characteristics of local materials and light on the space in the residential architecture of Studio Mumbai were confirmed. (Results) Among the eight residential projects completed between 2003 and 2011, four case projects with the following common characteristics were selected for further analysis. First, it is located on an open site, and the layout of the house is a spatial arrangement that creates an inner garden. Third, the space was constructed using the following common materials, local wood, stone, and coloured cement. Finally, it created a unique indoor atmosphere by controlling the inflow of light. (Conclusions) It was evident that the general characteristics found through the analysis of the four case projects were the response to the site, natural site conservation was made by locating the house within the site and the use of local materials (wood, stone, water) throughout the house. By using local and natural materials, the newly constructed building was visually and physically connected with the site in close harmony, and beyond the dimension of physical relations, the psychological effects and connections are created by the space and the physical connection with the site. In addition, the 'regional' or 'traditional' architectural method that appears in the studio Mumbai's work process is thought to be a delicate and rational way to reinterpret the traditional locality in a modern way. These design characteristics of Bijoy Jain are now established as his representative gestures through repeated use but also his architectural philosophy and construction method in connection with design methods that take into account various characteristics of the region suggests a method that connects the past and present thus creating a sustainable society. | - |
