- Abstract
- Japanese and English has been influential in the forming of Modern Korean. Besides many borrowed words, many expressions are supposed to imitate expressions of Japanese and English. In this paper, some such expressions, mentioned in former studies, are diachronically and quantitatively examined on the basis of the Dong-A Daily Corpus, a big newspaper corpus composed of news articles since the early 20th century. When counting frequencies of expressions, the number of syllables are estimated because words were not separated in old texts. The result is that, contrary to previous claims that each of the borrowed expressions has been used more and more, some expressions increase, some decrease, and others remain constant in use. The result shows that each expression behaves differently as an element in a language, a complex adaptive system.
