dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate acute effect of aerobic exercise intensity on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) signaling in skeletal muscle following fasting. Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to six groups; low-intensity aerobic exercise after 24-h fasting (LIAE24F, n=6), 2) high-intensity aerobic exercise after 24-h fasting (HIAE24F, n=6), 3) low-intensity aerobic exercise after 18-h fasting (LIAE18F, n=6), 4) high-intensity aerobic exercise after 18-h fasting (HIAE18F, n=6), 5) only high-intensity aerobic exercise (HIAE, n=6), and 6) control (CON, n=6). As a results, phosphorylated-AMPK, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) γ coactivator protein-1α (PGC-1α), PPARα, and FGF21 protein expressions were significantly different between the groups. p-AMPK was most significantly expressed in t he HIAE24F group compared to the other groups (p<.05), PCG-1α and PPARα proteins were the most significantly expressed in the LIAE24F group compared to the other groups (p<.05, respectively). The results showed that longer fasting time caused more active AMPK-FGF21 signaling. Above all, LIAE18F was observed to activate AMPK-FGF21 signaling more than HIAE, we demonstrated the possibility of low intensity exercise after 18 hours fasting as exercise therapy to improve metabolic disorders. | - |
