- Abstract
- The functional correction of dentofacial deformities by orthognathic surgery produces major changes in facial appearance. Le Fort I osteotomy is commonly indicated for the treatment of midface hypoplasia in maxillofacial deformities. However, if there is significant maxillary dentoalveolar protrusion associated with midface hypoplasia, the use of Le Fort I osteotomy for midface advancement will result in a poor facial aesthetic outcome with nasal airway obstruction and septal deviation.
Nasal septal deviation is a common complication after orthognathic surgery especially Lefrot I osteotomy and anatomic finding that may cause a subjective complaint of nasal obstruction. Adequate visualization of the nasal septum and assessment of septal deviations can be accomplished by using anterior rhinoscopy, fiberoptic nasal endoscopy and intra-oral approach.
We have recently published a new treatment strategy of correcting this nasal septal deviation by septoplasty with intraoral approach for non-syndromic cases. We would like to report a case of 23-year-old girl presenting with nasal septal deviation, which is caused by a Le Fort I osteotomy for the treatment of dento-alveolar deformity. The operation went uneventfully with septoplasty and significant facial aesthetic improvement.
