dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent that the cerebellum plays a role oninformation processing for static balance control with sensory illusion created by muscle vibration anddifferent surface conditions. To this end, we examined 8 patients with cerebellar disease and 8age-matched normal controls on static balance performance in vision/no-vision, stable/unstable supportsurface, vibration/no-vibration (tibialis anterior) conditions. The results showed that, compared withnormal controls, cerebellar patients increased their body sway when the vision was blocked and thisabnormality was more evident in no vision plus unstable surface conditions. This finding indicates thatthey rely more on visual and proprioceptive sensory systems. However, cerebellar patients did not showmuch sway in the muscle vibration condition, only decreasing sway speed, indicating that vestibularsensory system may not be critical for balance control by the cerebellum. In conclusion, the musclevibration stimulation adopted in the present study may not influence considerably on control of balanceprobably due to disability in sensory information processing in cerebellar patients. | - |
