초록

This paper presents the potential of Ultra-High Definition TV (UD-TV) broadcasting transmission systems beyond HD-TV over cable channels. Firstly, we analyzed the trend of the TOV (Threshold of Visibility) by extending the OpenCable (J.83 Annex B) system, 256QAM, which is the standard for American and Korean cable television transmission to 1024QAM, and found that the latter has a nearly 30% higher data rate than the former at the expense of an impractically high TOV. To achieve a practical TOV, we vary the code rates of the inner convolutional coder and replace the turbo codes in the forward error correction (FEC) part, thereby analyzing the best performance of the OpenCable systems using conventional FE-C. The results showed that, it is necessary to modify the ccnventional FEC of the OpenCable system to achieve a TOV less that 31.5dB. Moreover, we study the potential of UD-TV transmission via two or more TV channels, which is known as channel bonding, by examining the Shannon capacity in a 6MHz channel and the relationship with next generation AN codec technologies(1).
