근대경제성장의 기반형성기로서 18세기 조선의 성취와 그 한계

18th Century of Korean Economy as a Preparatory Stage for Modern Economic Growth
  • 이헌창

초록

Eighteenth century Korea had not developed market economy, and had never experienced proto-industrialization nor the Enlightenment, nor the Scientific Revolution. Therefore, Korea could not immediately develop a modern economy in the Imperialist period after opening the door to Western civilization. During the eighteenth century Korea had however achieved a considerable degree of agricultural technological development, market growth, institutional development, and human capital accumulation, thus paving the way to transition to modern economic growth. These internal factors allowed Korea to catch up and economically develop in the twentieth century. The institutions of the eighteenth century Korea secured property rights fairly well, but did not provide an environment that stimulated entrepreneurship. The international environment of Korea was favorable to absorption of the advanced agricultural civilization of China, but was discouraging for trade expansion and the absorption of Western civilization. Finally, Confucianism was unfavorable to the development of science and technology, but favorable to the accumulation of human capital.
