초록

This article re-examines the French gender system within the framework of canonical typology, assessing its conformity to the Canonical Gender Principle and related criteria proposed by Corbett and Fedden (2016). These include the stability of gender values, alignment with agreement classes, consistency across agreement domains, and the predictability of gender assignments based on lexical information. Drawing on evidence from common gender nouns, number–gender interactions, neologisms with competing gender values, partially neutralized pronominal paradigms, and domain-sensitive agreement, this study shows that non-canonical patterns in French recur across the system and cannot be dismissed as marginal. These findings place French at a considerable distance from the canonical ideal, despite its two-gender system. The article reframes this distance not as an anomaly, but as a site where canonical typology encounters empirical pressure, particularly at the intersection of agreement behavior and lexical conventionalization. Thus, this study clarifies the structure of the French gender system and the evaluative scope of canonicity as a typological tool.
