Direct-ammonia solid oxide fuel cells (DA-SOFCs) offer a promising energy conversion approach by eliminating the need for external ammonia decomposition to produce H(2)fuel. We report a facile and scalable one-pot infiltration method to synthesize highly active, thermally stable Ru nanoparticles exsolved on CeO2(Ru/CeO2) supports. Structural analyses reveal uniform similar to 2 nm Ru nanoparticles that remain firmly anchored and highly dispersed after prolonged high-temperature operation with strong metal-support interaction. Incorporating exsolved Ru/CeO(2)catalysts into commercial SOFC anodes via one-pot infiltration substantially improves ammonia decomposition, achieving >91% conversion at 650 degrees C and enhancing DA-SOFC performance by 23% over unmodified cells. The role of Ru/CeO(2)catalysts extends to H-2-fueled operation, demonstrating dual functionality in both ammonia decomposition and hydrogen oxidation. The method was scaled to a large-area commercial cell (12 & times; 12 cm(2)), demonstrating performance under industry-relevant operating conditions with stable operation over 150 h.
