On the Structural Ambiguity and the Equivalence in English-Korean Translation of Noun Phrase

초록

English noun phrase (NP) can be modified by postmodifiers as well as premodifiers, while Korean NP can be modified only by premodifiers. This difference makes hard the English-Korean translation of NP with multi-modifiers: the unwanted ambiguity arises in the translated Korean NP. The translated Korean NP containing ‘-wa/-kwa’-phrase also has the problematic ambiguity. This paper shows that the ambiguity comes from the structural ambiguity and investigates the translation strategies to resolve the ambiguity and to prevent mistranslation or mis-analysis. While scrambling and comma-using are useful in resolving the ambiguity of the translated NP with multi-modifiers, they are not in the case of the NP with ‘-wa/-kwa’-phrase. It is argued that the ambiguity of the NP with ‘-wa/-kwa’-phrase can be resolved by ‘translating one complex sentence into two separate sentences’, especially in the order of the modifier-sentence and the main sentence.
