The purpose of this study was to compare and investigate the three spine models of three-dimensional kinematic spine motion during trunk movements in free normal gait by developing the spine coordinate system. A retro-reflective motion analysis system was used to measure spine motions, using three kinematic trunk models(ModelⅠ: one rigid spine, ModelⅡ: lumbar-thoracic spine, and ModelⅢ: multi-segmental spine). Fifteen middle and high school students(age: 16.6±1.51 yrs, heights: 157±5.96 cm, weights: 45.5±4.88 kg) who have the idiopathic scoliosis were recruited as the subjects. Significant differences were noted in the total trunk motion measured between the three models. First, there was significant difference of the side-bending(p<.05) in sagittal plane during Post-hoc analysis of the ANOVA results for the three spine models. Second, the spinal column level of trunk motions revealed an differences of angular displacement during ROM(rang of motion) in frontal plane, sagittal plane and transverse plane of the multi-segmental model. These findings suggest that use of multi-segmental model provides the most interpretable findings, that is the combined movements and the couple movements allowing for differentiation of translation and rotation of x, y, z of three dimension in individual motion patterns.
