초록

The application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is rapidly emerging as a promising technology for mitigating harmful algal blooms (HABs), mainly caused from the outgrowth of cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa. This study aims to develop a novel HAB mitigation strategy by investigating the HAB removal mechanism of ZIF-8 and thus creating a newly formulated material that addresses the limitations of existing removal techniques. The application of ZIF-8 with M. aeruginosa resulted in a significant inhibition of M. aeruginosa photosynthesis as well as the sudden uprise of reactive oxygen species, while maintaining stability of ZIF-8 with minimal environmental impact. However, MOFs, such as ZIF-8, still face significant challenges in practical applications due to difficulties in recovery and reusability. To overcome these limitations further, a novel fiberbased composite, ZIF-8 infused PANF, was synthesized using polyacrylonitrile as a polymer matrix to immobilize ZIF-8. The performance of ZIF-8 infused PANF in controlling M. aeruginosa was thoroughly evaluated. The results demonstrate not only the effective removal of M. aeruginosa but also confirmed that the composite material overcomes the typical limitations of MOFs by enabling both recovery and reusability. Ultimately, this study contributes valuable insights for improving HAB management strategies, thus helping protect aquatic ecosystems and public health.
