민족과 불평등: 중국 신장의 위구르족

초록

Ethnic inequality is a major threat to stability and democracy in the ethnically divided societies. This paper examines the inequality of income between Uyghurs and Hans in Xinjiang. The massive immigration of Hans into Xinjiang greatly altered ethnic relationship in favor of Hans. We explore the impact of institutional and cultural factors on inequality. Uyghurs are underrepresented in the political body of Xinjiang and excluded from decision-making process. Moreover, Uyghurs have community minded values and customs including the tradition of early marriage. The persistence of inequality can be attributed to these institutional and cultural factors.
