Recent advances in biodegradable neuroelectronics, which remove the need for extraction surgery and reduce foreign body reactions, provide versatile options for implantable devices, such as for provisional diagnosis and acute treatment. The electrical interface of neuroelectronics is a key technology for the acquisition and delivery of precisely controlled signals. Herein, we describe the hydrolysis mechanisms of candidate electrode materials and their properties for use in biodegradable neuroelectronic devices. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and strategies for increasing the long-term stability of electrodes. Finally, we summarize recent applications of biodegradable neuroelectronic devices for the diagnosis and treatment of neural disorders.
