국립중앙박물관 전시를 본 청소년 관람객의 선행경험과 의미 재구성

초록

This study analyzed how adolescent visitors reconstruct their historical understanding and perceptions of the museum through their pre-, during-, and post-visit experiences. By utilizing participant-generated photography, this research investigated the meaning-making processes of five middle and high school students at the National Museum of Korea, capturing their focal points of attention. The findings revealed that in the pre-visit stage, the students exhibited ambivalent prior experiences shaped by school, media, and family. Rather than holding singular expectations, they flexibly perceived the museum as a space to satisfy the senses, confirm existing knowledge, and connect with daily experiences. As they navigated the exhibitions, their behaviors alternated between superficial observation and active meaning-making. When their contexts aligned with the physical exhibitions, they demonstrated active engagement through confirming, evaluating, empathizing, questioning, and exploring. In the post-visit stage, this engagement resulted in a complex interplay between the reinforcement and reconstruction of understanding. The former involved the confirmation and solidification of prior knowledge, while the latter involved the modification and expansion of existing historical understanding or perceptions of the museum at various levels. Ultimately, these findings highlight the dynamic potential of adolescent visitors, providing foundational data for museum planning and operations. Furthermore, they emphasize the need for continued research on the meaning-making of adolescent visitors.
