초록

In the recent years there has been more awareness of architectural projects that address material and tectonics. There can be many reasons for this tendency. But most of all, the fundamental return to 'spatiality' is the most important factor. Peter Zumthor does not use technological decorations for the sake of expression nor does he strive of striking visual impact. Instead his design deals with the relationship with the site, historical and cultural context and the more 'down to earth' experience of the space as the main issues. Further more, he realizes these special characteristics mainly through the use of material and light. His construction of a new 'spatiality' is a method of capturing the cultural and historical characteristics of the site rather than opting for a conventional representation of a new form and decoration. This study investigates into Peter Zumthor's use of material, light and the construction method, in terms of spatial experience. His design may appear simple, however, there are specific ways in which he uses light, material and tectonic. The aim of this study lies in the highlighting the impact of the tectonics and construction method have on the spatial experience. Zumthor's Bruder Klaus Chapel and Kolumba Museum have been chosen for this analysis. Within the two different spaces with differing programs, the study concludes with the findings of impact of light on the spatial experience and spatial perception.
