Current Issues of Elementary Korean Dictionaries in South & North Korea and Yanbian, China

초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate current issues of elementary Korean dictionaries(EKDs) in South Korea(SK), North Korea(NK) and Yanbian, China(YC). In macro structure point of view, the following questions concern current issues: ① How many numbers of headword are listed in EKD? SK has about 30 thousand words, whereas NK and YC have about 10 thousand or 20 thousand words. ② Does EKD contain elementary words as headword? SK has those words as headword, whereas NK and YC don’t. ③ Does EKD have particles and endings as headword? NK and YC don’t but it depends on dictionaries for SK. ④ Does EKD have phrase expressions, for example, noun + noun, as headword? SK has them, whereas NK and YC don’t because they both don’t use spaces for noun + noun phrases. In micro structure point of view, the following questions concern current issues: ① Are words in EKD explained by their origins and types? SK does but NK doesn’t. Origins and types for Chinese letter for YC are not explained but have loanword explained. ② Does EKD explain word class? NK and YC do, whereas SK only covers a few. ③ Does EKD have pronunciation mark? If so, how is it marked? Most EKDs have pronunciation mark, but methods depend on each country. ④ Does EKD cover practical examples? All of them do, but most of their examples lack practicality.
