초록
This qualitative study explores the experiences of leisure innovation among South Korean baby boomers (born 1955–1963) in their early later life. Drawing upon the Innovation Theory of Successful Aging, the study explored how older adults initiate and engage in new leisure activities, the factors that facilitate or hinder these efforts, and the perceived benefits. The findings revealed four overarching themes: the process of leisure innovation, internal and external facilitators, internal and external constraints, and the benefits of engaging in new leisure. Participants initially experienced hesitation and anxiety, but gradually adapted through persistence and enjoyment. Facilitating factors included long-held interests, increased sense of freedom, time perspective, social relationships, awareness of leisure opportunities, and positive aging role models. In contrast, physical limitations, psychological resistance, financial burden, and competing social roles were identified as constraints. Through their participation in new leisure activities, participants experienced meaningful benefits including broadened social ties, a sense of belonging, greater self-confidence, and personal growth. The study provides insights into how older adults navigate leisure innovation beyond the framework of continuity. Implications for leisure education and age-friendly policies are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.
