초록
This study aims to analyze acoustically the monophthongs of Jeju Korean speakers. There are two groups of subjects participated in the present study: 40 Jeju Korean speakers(20 in their 20's and 20 in their 70's). Using the phonetic equipments and acoustic materials, we analyzed the phonetic values of the Jeju Korean. The result shows that the Jeju Korean has different vowel systems between generations: 70's have nine vowels(/i, e, æ, a, ə, ɨ, u, o, ɔ/), on the other hand 20's have seven vowels(/i, E, a, ə, ɨ, u, o/). While 20's Jeju Korean speakers couldn't distinguish /e/ from /æ/, 70's disentangled the vowels in Jeju Korean. Only 70's participants can pronounce vowel /ɔ/. It seems to be attributed to influence the Seoul Korean and extralinguistic factors like high frequency of contact with mass media. Furthermore, we find out the difference of region-specific in Jeju Korean. People living in mountain villages produce and distinguish between /e/ and /æ/ more than people living in coastal villages. It is possible to be influenced by the Seoul Korean in that people living in coastal villages easily contact with Seoul Korean speakers.
