헝가리 대학 한국학과 신입생 특성과 요구 분석에 관한 연구 -카롤리 가스파르 대학교 한국학과 입학 초기 신입생을 대상으로

This study aims to identify the socio-cultural and linguistic characteristics as well as the Korean language learning needs of incoming freshmen in the Department of Korean Studies at a Hungarian university, thereby providing foundational data for the advancement of Korean language education in Hungary. A survey was conducted with 79 incoming freshmen majoring in Korean Studies at Károli Gáspár University. The results revealed that the vast majority of these students had primarily learned Indo-European languages, such as English and German, during their secondary education. Regarding learning motivation, instrumental motivation was predominant, with career-related purposes accounting for the largest share; a significant number of these respondents expressed a desire to seek employment at Korean corporations operating in Hungary. Among the various subfields within Korean Studies, the demand for practical language learning was the highest. While approximately 76% of the freshmen had some prior experience learning Korean before admission, more than half of the total respondents remained at the introductory proficiency level. For their target proficiency level, the CEFR C1 level was the most preferred, which is one level higher than B2, the ultimate educational milestone of the undergraduate curriculum. Among language skills and subject courses, the demand for speaking was the highest, followed by culture and history. Furthermore, the students demonstrated positive perceptions of both Korean culture and the language itself, maintaining a routine exposure to Korean language environments in their daily lives. Notably, Hallyu (Korean Wave) contents, including K-pop, served as a primary catalyst for generating their interest, ultimately triggering both their language study and their choice of major. This study holds significance as it comprehensively examines the socio-cultural characteristics and learning needs of incoming freshmen at a Hungarian university—an area that has received limited research attention. The findings are expected to offer valuable pedagogical implications for local Korean language teaching, learning, and curriculum design.
