The friction and wear performance of metallic components have advanced significantly with the advent of high-entropy alloys (HEAs), known for their exceptional mechanical properties. However, the friction reduction capabilities of HEAs have plateaued, lagging behind those of self-lubricating materials. Integrating self-lubricants into metal composites presents a promising strategy to achieve low friction while preserving microstructural stability. In this study, we investigate the wear resistance and friction behavior of a multi-layered CrCoNiSi0.3/ MoS2 film, synthesized via magnetron sputtering. The multi-layered architecture results in a significantly reduced friction coefficient (0.0938) and enhanced wear resistance, evidenced by a low wear rate of 9.91 x 10-6 mm3/Nm. This performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of the HEA and MoS2 layers, which provide increased hardness, elastic recovery, and resistance to deformation. The unique layered structure mitigates the typical trade-off between friction and wear, ensuring superior tribological behavior with minimal surface roughness and robust interfacial adhesion. These findings demonstrate the potential of multi-layered CrCo-NiSi0.3/MoS2 films for high-performance self-lubricating applications, offering a novel approach to optimizing the tribological properties of metal-based multi-layered films.
