Economic and strategic perspectives on CDN pricing: A comprehensive review

We present a comprehensive survey on pricing strategies and economic models in Content Delivery Networks (CDNs). CDNs play a vital role in enhancing web performance, reducing latency, and optimizing content distribution. As the demand for efficient content delivery grows, CDN pricing has become a critical factor affecting stakeholders, including Content Providers (CPs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and CDNs themselves. However, the diverse objectives of these entities, such as cost minimization, revenue maximization, and Quality of Service (QoS) optimization, create significant challenges in designing fair and efficient pricing models. Traditional pricing mechanisms may not effectively address these challenges, necessitating the development of new economic and market-based approaches. In this paper, we review various CDN pricing models, developed for a single CDN, multiple CDNs, and the dynamics of the two-sided market that involves CPs and ISPs at each side. Further, we discuss the impact of network neutrality and fairness on CDN pricing. We highlight emerging trends, open research challenges, and future directions in CDN pricing, which provide insights into the evolving landscape of content delivery economics.
