초록

The purpose of this paper is to find out how to interpret the Korean compound sentence system in terms of systemic functional linguistics. First, while the Korean compound sentence system is usually set from a structural point of view, systemic functional linguistics views clause complexes as various criteria such as arrangement, logico-semantic type, and repetition. These criteria can be identified in all one clause complex. Second, clause complex refers to a composition in which clauses of the same hierarchy, not lower hierarchy, are combined. Therefore, the adnominal clause that modifies noun and the adverb clause that modifies predicate or adverb group are identified as embedding clause. Third, a subordinate clause in a subordinate sentence, that is, a sentence adverb clause, constitutes a clause complex of a subordinate arrangement. In contrast, component adverb clauses related only to specific predicates are classified as embedding clauses, not subordinate arrangement. Fourth, complex sentences formed by thought projection and verbal projection form a clause complex. Among them, a clause projected with a direct citation constitutes an equal arrangement, and a clause projected with an indirect citation constitutes a subordinate arrangement.
