Relationships between Psychological Needs Supportive Coaching Behaviors and Teamwork in Recreational Sports: The Mediating Effects of Psychological Need Satisfaction

초록

The present study investigated the mediating role of psychological need satisfaction in the relation between coach needs-supportive(autonomy, competence, relatedness) behavior and athlete teamwork in recreational sports context. In this study, athlete participants(N=298; Mage=36.88; SD=7.03) from recreational baseball and soccer teams in Seoul and Gyeonggi. As results, the relatedness-supportive coaching behavior was a significant predictor of teamwork, whereas direct effects of both coach autonomy support and competence support on teamwork was not significant. In mediation analyses, psychological needs satisfaction for competence and relatedness were found to be a mediating effect in the relationship between the coach needs-supportive behavior and teamwork, whereas autonomy need satisfaction was not found to be mediating effect in these relationships. In conclusion, these findings suggested that needs-supportive coaching behavior are crucially important to satisfy athletes’ psychological needs for competence, and relatedness, which in turn were positively associated with teamwork among participants in recreational sports teams.
