Fluvio-geomorphic Indicators of Holocene Shoreline Position in River Deltas: Review and New Evidence in the East Coast of India

초록

Remote sensing, chronological, and GPR-based studies suggest that the drainage morphology of deltas of peninsular India is controlled by various stages of sea level changes since the Pleistocene. Various fluvial geomorphological changes in coastal environments indicate that sea level fluctuations contribute to modifying the deltaic geomorphology. The anastomosing-meandering transition, river mouth shift, and the dendritic channels along the paleo-strandlines are indicative of various stages of marine transgression and regression. River mouth shifts along the Holocene strandline were prominent in the east coast of India. Most of the river sinuosities along the present-day coast are caused by mouth shifts along the paleo-coasts and the dendritic channels along the Holocene strandline support the position of paleo-strandlines. GPR study along the Holocene strandline of the Mahanadi delta reveals sub-surface structures indicative of marine transgression. Similar channel geomorphological changes in response to sea level change are observed in other deltaic regions worldwide.
