초록

Purpose : This study aims to empirically examine the determinants of financial performance of internet-only banks compared with conventional banks in Korea, with a particular focus on innovation-related factors and structural differences in performance mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach : Using quarterly panel data from 2018Q1 to 2025Q3, this study conducts a comparative analysis between internet-only banks and major conventional banks. Group differences are first examined through t-tests, followed by regression analyses employing pooled OLS and fixed effects models. Interaction terms between the internet-only bank dummy and key innovation variables are incorporated to identify differential effects on performance. Findings : The results indicate that internet-only banks exhibit superior cost efficiency compared to conventional banks, while overall profitability remains relatively lower. However, the impact of asset growth and cost structure on performance differs significantly between the two groups, suggesting distinct performance mechanisms driven by innovation-oriented business models. These findings imply that the performance of internet-only banks is shaped more by growth stages and structural characteristics than by short-term profitability considerations.
