Minimization of Leak Detection Overlaps Using Sensitivity Matrix-Based Optimal Meter Placement in Water Distribution Networks

The optimal meter placement (OMP) problem for leak detection in water distribution networks (WDNs) has been a serious concern for several decades. Despite the need to minimize detection overlapping for effective OMP, there is a lack of standardized metrics in meters that measure hydraulic variables, such as pipe flow meters and pressure meters. This study proposes a detection overlapping minimization (DOM) model formulated by applying set theory to a sensitivity matrix to determine the OMP for pressure meters. The pressure gradient (PG) matrix, one of several sensitivity matrices, is utilized to indicate the detection performance metrics (detection area, detection overlapping, and detectability) of the pressure meters. Additionally, binary-score and multiscore (MS) matrices are proposed to mitigate cases where the PG matrix is ineffective in representing detection overlapping owing to a skewed PG distribution. The DOM model is applied to two distinct WDNs, Hanoi and Austin, to investigate different OMP tendencies based on the network structures. The results suggest that the PG matrix can be directly applied to the DOM model in a network with a relatively even PG distribution, such as Hanoi. However, the MS matrix is appropriate for a network with a relatively skewed PG distribution, such as Austin. Overall, a matrix that emphasizes detection overlapping while partially preserving the order of leak sensitivity is suitable for OMP.
