Representation and communication of Korean architecture during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1897)

During the Joseon period in Korea important public events or architectural works were reported in uigwe (handbooks for state ceremonies) and later used as reference when similar events were organised. Drawings in architectural uigwe (eighteenth to twentieth century) are very different to western manuals. This study critically reviews all the information or knowledge about these drawings (recent study topic) and verifies their effectiveness as technical instruments by comparing them with the reality of the worksite. The analysis shows how the drawings in the uigwe should be considered, to all effects and purposes, architectural drawings since they transmit appropriate data to their cultural context.
