This study aimed to examine the characteristics of Pyeong embodiedin the imaginative geography by Gim Jae Chan(金載瓚, 1746~1827) whoserved as the governor of Pyeongyang(平壤) in the late 18th centuryand to figure out its literary characteristics. <Giseongbyeolgok(箕城別曲)> is a work that expressed the history and landscape of Pyeongyangsplendidly. While it is similar to the paint <Giseongdo(箕城圖)>, it waswidely spread and accepted even after the 19th century for its differentefficacy. Although this was written from the special viewpoint of thegovernor, it could be spread out widely and secure universality becausethe signifier ‘Giseong(箕城)’ could cause different imaginative geographyfrom ‘Pyeongyang’, which resulted in the formation of emotion andsympathy. From its beginning, <Giseongbyeolgok> paid more attention to thepast which reminded by Giseong than the present of Pyeongyang. Itdescribed the origination of the space from Gojoseon(古朝鮮) and itshistory afterward in more detail expressing the grandeur spirit as thepast capital city, and imbuing pride. In this process, retrospective andidealistic literary characteristics were found in a scene embodyingGijagung(箕子宮) and Jeongjeon(井田). But, it could confirm that therewas a contrasting literary sense in the part that was related to thescenic spots of Pyeongyang. Instead of describing the present scene of Pyeongyang in a realistic way, the work imagined the emotion andsympathy in a transcendental perspective that demonstrated theidealized landscape beauty. As such, Pyeongyang in <Giseongbyeolgok> was described as aplace of having grandeur history in the past, and was idealized as aplace of having idealistic landscape beauty. Underneath, there was anintrinsic imaginative geography of the governor who intended a goodreign as a governor. It has a literary significance in that the authorembodied a highly elated mood and awareness orientation during hisjourney to historic places and scenic sites of Pyeongyang as a governorin sequence of 4-metrical rhythm and through the esthetic sense of thevernacular.
