일본 다크 투어리즘의 공간 스토리텔링 ──박물관 아바시리 감옥(網走監獄)을 중심으로──

This study examines the Abashiri Prison Museum by combining an analysis of the museum's spatial storytelling with an analysis of visitors' digital discourse. A qualitative examination of three dimensions—spatial layout and visiting routes, architectural preservation and scene reenactment, and the staging of a frontier-development narrative through experiential devices—shows that the museum resituates prison history within the narrative of Hokkaido's modern development. Rather than foregrounding colonial oppression or political accountability, the museum organizes the prison's past as a continuous, observable history of everyday life, while experiential and consumption-oriented devices absorb the political weight of punishment into a discourse of frontier development—a tendency this study identifies as depoliticization. A text-mining analysis of 1,471 Japanese reviews collected from the travel platform Jalan, employing word-frequency, word-cloud, and co-occurrence network analyses, reveals that visitor discourse converges into three clusters: a frontier narrative (Hokkaido–development–convict), an impression of lifelike reenactment (figures–lifelike–the period), and a sense of spatial scale (spacious–facilities–enjoyment). The close correspondence between the museum's spatial design and visitors' language suggests that depoliticization operates not only at the level of curatorial intention but is also actively reproduced in the ways visitors articulate their experience. The Abashiri case thus concretely instantiates the broader tendency of Japanese dark tourism to frame difficult history as an object of learning and to convert negative heritage into local resources.
