초록

The paper is a study of the space question in mid-nineteenthcentury Nottingham, to illuminate the interrelations between urbanspace, population growth, and housing problems in a midland industrialcity. It begins by posing a question about the peculiar pattern ofpopulation growth during the first half of the nineteenth century inNottingham. The main factors affecting the formation and control ofits urban space are analyzed, with emphasis on the enclosure questionof the city. The background and outcomes of the failure to resolvethe enclosure question is examined to a considerable extent. Alsoaddressed are the characteristics of the subsequent suburbanizationof Nottingham in that the unique pattern of the suburbanizationemerged when the physical expansion of the town was hinderedduring a period of population growth and a growing demand for land. The paper then provides a more detailed description on the city’shousing problem, the back-to-backs in particular. An analysis andcomparison of housing and urban space is also made betweenneighboring midland cities as well as other major industrial cities. Topics discussed are the construction of the interior and exterior ofthe back-to-backs including the court system, workshops withinhouses, density, cholera, and dressing-rooms among other dwellingproblems. The paper attempts to illustrate the nature of urban spaceand housing in mid-nineteenth century Nottingham. It discusses theways that urban space and housing influenced one another, and theextent to which they depicted various aspects of the city’s urbanizationand people’s lives in it.
